What Six Sigma is

What DOE is
Design of Experiments is a statistical technique for planning and analysing experiments so you can find the true cause-and-effect relationships in a process — efficiently, with far fewer runs than trial-and-error. It answers a narrower, sharper question: which factors actually affect my output, and what's the optimal setting?
Where DOE fits inside Six Sigma
DOE is most commonly used in the "Improve" phase of a DMAIC project — once you've measured the process and analysed likely causes, DOE is the tool that lets you test those causes rigorously and find the optimal combination of settings. In other words: Six Sigma is the project framework; DOE is one of the sharpest tools inside it.

- You want a company-wide, repeatable quality-improvement system — with certified belts leading structured projects across many processes → invest in a full Six Sigma programme (Yellow/Green/Black Belt), of which DOE will be one module.
- You want both — many factories train engineers in DOE first for immediate wins on a live problem, then build toward Six Sigma certification for teams that will run ongoing improvement projects.
A practical example
In our DOE program, participants work through a real case: a manufacturer with a 14% defect rate from injection-moulding shrinkage. A single 2³ factorial DOE experiment — the kind of tool a Six Sigma Green Belt would reach for in the Improve phase — found the interaction between melt temperature and injection pressure that OFAT testing had missed for years, cutting the defect rate to 4.5%. That's DOE doing its job as a tool; a full Six Sigma project would wrap that same experiment inside a structured Define-Measure-Analyse-Improve-Control cycle with formal sign-off at each stage.
